The Cruel Prince by Holly Black tells the interesting story of a fantasy world that is defined by immortals ( a “fey’) and mortals (regular humans). The main characters are three sisters named Vivienne, Taryn, and Jude. Taryn and Jude are the two younger sisters that are fully mortal and that fact makes their lives harder in the dystopian world they live in. After their mother had the oldest sister Vivienne with her immortal husband, she tricked him and secretly went to the human world and had the other two sisters with her human lover. Madoc, the original husband, finds out and kills the mother’s lover and the mother herself. Soon Jude, Taryn, and Vivienne are left as orphans and they're stolen away to live in the High Court of Faerie. Their lives are never the same after that moment as they live their lives in a strange new place. In this world, the fey despises humans and that leaves the two mortal sisters feeling in danger and left out. Jude wants to fit in so desperately and to win a place in the Court, but in order to do so she must defy against Prince Cardan, and that’s harder than expected. This book shows the dark reality of the two mortal sisters and how they must do what they have to survive and make their place in this horrible world they were forced into. Although, it also shows how the sisters all work together to save each other and claim the respect they deserved since the beginning, and the respect mortals deserved. The book title relates to the storyline in the sense that the sisters all had to team up to defeat the Cruel Prince in order to save themselves and everyone within this realm.
