The Hate U Give is a story about a 16-year-old black teen named Starr Carter. Starr attends a white high school and lives in a black neighborhood. Starr struggles to be her true self between these two different worlds until she witnesses the murder of her best friend, Khalil. This event changes Starr’s perspective and shines a light on the disparities between growing up “white” and growing up “black” in America.
I believe this book should be required reading for teens and adults. The Hate U Give is an honest snapshot of the racial injustice that exists in our country today. My favorite character is Starr. Throughout the book, you watch Starr come to terms with her role in fighting for what is right and standing up for the memory of her best friend, Khalil. Starr finds her voice and speaks out for her community who feel they have been forgotten and left behind in this country.I highly recommend this important book. It is a revealing look at the impacts of systemic racism in America and allows the reader to either see things from a new perspective or realize they are not alone in facing these issues. I rate this book 10/10.
